2019 Toyota Prius - Fine for most, most of the time

2019 Toyota Prius - Fine for most, most of the time With upwards of 50 miles per gallon in combined driving, a spacious trunk, and a reputation for reliability, the Toyota Prius meets the needs of most drivers, most of the time. Will the addition of an electronic all-wheel-drive system add to its practical nature?

Toyota employs a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine, paired with an electric motor to power the front wheels in the Prius. Together, this powertrain is good for 121 horsepower. If you choose a Prius with the electric all-wheel drive (AWD-e), you’ll also enjoy the benefit of an electric motor powering the rear wheels. This system provides extra power to the rear wheels between 0 and 6 mph, and when necessary at speeds up to 43 mph.

AWD-e does hurt the Prius’s fuel economy. Normally rated at 54 mpg city, 50 highway, 52 combined, the Prius AWD returns 52/48/50.

Inside, the Prius Limited will receive an impressive, vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen. All other trims receive Toyota’s much smaller 6.1-inch display. Although it still appears sophisticated, the Prius’s infotainment system does not run either Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Pricing for the 2019 Toyota Prius starts at $23,770 and rises to $32,200 for the Limited trim, all before options and the $930 destination fee. Combined with its impressive running costs, this makes the Prius an exceptionally good value.
