Rashida Tlaib calls for a $20-an-hour minimum wage

Rashida Tlaib calls for a $20-an-hour minimum wage Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib has called for a $20-an-hour minimum wage during an event in Detroit on Sunday evening. Her calls come one week after House Democrats on Thursday passed legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by October 2025, although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is refusing to bring it up in his chamber. The freshman Democratic representative from Michigan stated the minimum wage should be raised to between $18 and $20 an hour. "Make sure America Rising hears that. It should be $20 an hour. $18 to $20 an hour at this point,'  Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib said, calling out political action committee America Rising (Pictured: Tlaib at opening plenary session of the NAACP 110th National Convention on Monday)  Her calls come one week after House Democrats on Thursday passed legislation to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour by October 2025, although Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is refusing to bring it up in his chamberShe had been attending an event in support of One Fair Wage, a Michigan organization that is pushing to raise the minimum wage to $12 in 2022 for non-tipped workers and to $12 an hour in 2024 for tipped workers. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, while tipped workers such as waiters can be paid a minimum of just $2.13 per hour.Certain cities have raised this figure,  with Seattle adopting a $15 minimum wage four years ago. Tlaib backed up her point by saying people struggle to get by on the current minimum salary. 'Think about that for one minute,' Tlaib said. 'People cannot live on those kinds of wages. We can't allow people to be living off of tips and relying on tipped wages.'She added that the current proposal of a $15 nationwide minimum salary should have been on the cards years ago, and now the number should sit at at least $18.   'Think about that for one minute,' Tlaib said.
