Game Not Over: Amusement arcades tap community spirit to stay relevant Despite its tatty decor, gloomy lighting and overflowing ashtrays, Mikado is a world-famous venue for arcade games. Since opening in Tokyo’s Kabukicho district in 2006 and relocating to Takadanobaba two years later, it has built up a global following among arcade enthusiasts. Mikado’s tournaments, which are held every day, are largely centered around the arcade’s vast collection of classic one-on-one fighting games. Mikado is, however, part of a dying breed. There were 51,520 arcades in Japan in 1995, but that number had dwindled to 13,013 by 2017.
