Safe Medication For Breastfeeding Mothers

Breastfeeding mothers have to be careful when it comes to what they digest while they breastfeed. This can be unsafe for the baby while breastfeeding. Some medication can cause a decrease in production of breastmilk which in turn will cause stress and leave mother feeling frustrated.
This could be different if your baby has other health problems or premature. Below are a list of ailments and the best possible treatment plan for breastfeeding mothers.

1. GASTRO-OESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE (GORD)

The most common drug of choice is Gaviscon. This is safe to use in breastfeeding mothers.
It is important to eat smaller meals and avoid fatty and spicy foods.

2. CONSTIPATION

Fybogel and Lactulose are the safest options for breastfeeding mothers.
AVOID Senna as this can transfer through the breastmilk and can cause colic or diarrhoea in babies.

3. PAIN & MIGRAINE

Paracetamol is safe to use while breastfeeding. Amount is too small to be harmful.
Ibuprofen should be used with caution.
AVOID Aspirin: it is not safe for children up to the age of 16.
AVOID Co-codamol: risk of morphine overdose in infants.
When breastfeeding mothers experience migraine, OTC sumatriptan can be used. However breastfeeding should be withheld for 12 hours after treatment.

4. COLD

Cold is self-limiting and will pass after 7-10days. Painkillers like paracetamol can be used and steam inhalation to relieve mucus.
Pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, day nurse) may suppress lactation; avoid if lactation not well established or if milk production insufficient.
