At issue were two reviewable aspects of the play. First, was Narvaez’s batted ball truly a home run: did it clear the outfield boundary or was the call incorrect? Second, did Narvaez properly touch home plate during his celebration with teammates?
The former (HR/Not HR) is a Crew Chief Review and the latter (base touch/appeal play) is a Manager’s Challenge. At some point during the sequence—while on the headset with the Replay Official, talking to Scott Servais, or otherwise—Hudson and Renteria were on different pages about the review.
Hudson asked Renteria if he wanted to review the play (both aspects treated as one, the HR/Not Review and Base Touch Challenge) and Renteria responded as if the two had been broken up into two separate parts (HR/Not HR vs Base Touch), such that Hudson misinterpreted Renteria’s response that he didn’t want to challenge one aspect of the play (base touch) as an indication that he didn’t want to challenge ANY aspect of the play (including the HR/boundary call), resulting in Hudson ending the game via a home run ruling that may have been overturned had the play actually gone to New York.
