Local schools say students have been diagnosed with pertussis

Local schools say students have been diagnosed with pertussis CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Two local school districts say they're seeing cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

A letter was sent to parents of students at Nagel Middle School Monday saying a student there has a case of whooping cough. The Oak Hills School District sent a similar letter Sept. 16, saying there was at least one case of the disease at Oak Hills High School.

Whooping cough is highly contagious and spread by respiratory droplets. Parents are urged to check their children's vaccinations against whooping cough and make sure they are up to date, as well as be on the lookout for symptoms of a whoop-like cough and trouble breathing. See a doctor for testing, if needed.

The observation period for Nagel Middle School students is from now to Oct. 18. Oak Hills' exposure period ends Oct. 2.
