Study: Activity, fewer processed foods can improve mood

Study: Activity, fewer processed foods can improve mood CINCINNATI (WKRC) - If you are feeling grumpy or in a bad mood, a new study says you may want to get moving and change your menu.

A new study says we are happier when we eat healthier. Researchers in the journal PLOS One had people who reported feeling sad, a lack of desire to do much and said they lacked the motivation to make a big change in diet.

They all reported eating a lot of processed foods that were high in fat and sugar, so in this study they were asked to add in more fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy foods, healthier proteins, such as seafood, and more whole grains.

They had to eat these healthier foods for three weeks. Then researchers compared this group to another that felt the same symptoms but didn't make any diet changes.

Sure enough at the end of just this short time, the diet-changers reported major mood improvements. They had less anxiety and said they felt happier overall.

They were not asked to limit the amount of food they ate, only to limit processed foods.

Researchers speculate along with fitness, this may be a powerful combination in fighting inflammation in the body and, perhaps, in fighting off misery.

This diet study was with young adults, but it's likely we all could benefit by eating this way and getting activity for food and mood.

Researchers in this study had phone coaches help people get eating on track. They also were given $60 during the study to buy healthier food choices.
