So Usman Garuba born to Nigerian parents in March 2002, joined Real Madrid's youth ranks at 11 years old. And quickly became an unstoppable force at Junior Level.
NBA scouts got their first good look at 14 years, during the 2016 FIBA U16 European championship. When playing against older competition, mostly 2 years older Garuba averaged 16 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks per game, with a Zion Williamson like 72% field goal percentage. On course route to winning tournament MVP while leading Spain to a gold medal.
He has continued to dominate FIBA youth tournaments with great efficiency, this summer he led Spain to gold at the FIBA U18 European championships, averaging 15.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.1 blocks per game.
All while being the star player for Real Madrid's junior team. Averaging 15 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks, shooting 68% at last year's Adidas Next Generation Tournament, the top European youth club competition.
Earlier in the 2018-19 season, at 16 years and 7 months of age, Garuba became the third-youngest player to ever suit up for the Real Madrid senior team, the youngest being you guessed it, Luka, to play in the Liga ACB, the best domestic league outside the NBA. He also became the youngest forward or big man to ever play in the ACB, an unheard-of feat for a 16 year old considering the physicality of the league, despite only featuring in 17 minutes over 2 games, Usman made a serious impact, recording a combined 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks, and shot 4-of-5 from the field.
This season, he has continued to break club and league records for a player his age, which is incredible when you think of it knowing we just saw a generational European talent break seemingly every possible record for a teenager at the same club. - in you know. During Usman's very first game, he became the youngest starter in club history. At age 17, 6 months and 9 days, he surpassed the previous record-holder Luka Doncic by almost two months. In his next appearance, he had 13 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 22 minutes of ACB action, shattering even more records. He is now the youngest player with a double-double in league history, passing Luka Doncic, The youngest to grab 10 rebounds in game passing Doncic again, and the second youngest to record efficiency of 24, behind Ricky Rubio. Who once upon a time was a European prodigy himself.
So that's where the next Luka Doncic label came from, not in the sense that their games are anything alike. What they have in common is the fact that they are both generational international lottery pick talents, that came from Real Madrid. Funnily enough, the two have a good relationship and worked out together when Luka was still in Madrid.
But yeah. Usman is a very intriguing prospect whose playing style doesn't resemble many NBA players. He has drawn comparisons to Draymond Green because he doesn't fit a certain position, listed as both a center, forward and wing on various different scouting sites. The NBA player his game probably closest resembles, in many aspects outside of the dunking. Is none other than Zion Williamson. A comparison I was going to touch on, before realizing if I go ahead and compare a player to Luka Doncic and Zion Williamson in the same video. Then Ima ends up a meme like Korzemba when he called Lonzo Steph curry with a 40 inch vertical. So I'm gonna leave that for a follow-up video,
But overall, I'm sure we can agree that Garuba has transcendental potential defensively, and has rare instincts and decision-making ability. By showing that his junior success can translate against professionals in a league like Spain, Usman has taken his NBA stock to the next level. If he sustains or builds upon his performance so far, he will secure a spot as a top pick in 2021. ESPN recently said he would be the top international player in their upcoming 2021 mock draft. Believed to be one of the most talented classes in recent years.
