Manila and New Delhi are likely to reach an agreement next year on sending Russian-Indian cruise missiles to the Philippines, Indian media Hindustantimes.com said. According to the Hindustan Times newspaper, the Philippines is likely to be the first country to buy a BrahMos missile.
"As far as the Philippine Army is concerned, the consensus about the BrahMos system is the agreement that was carried out. Now, this is all about price negotiations and we hope the agreement will be finalized next year, "a source familiar with the talks told the Hindustan Times.
Negotiations are now reported to focus on price and type of payment.
"Various options are being considered - whether it has to be internal funding or preferential loans - and whether there will be some preferential conditions offered for sales. The cost will determine how many systems are purchased, "added the source.
India also reportedly negotiated the possibility of sending BrahMos missiles to Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.
BrahMos, produced by the joint company BrahMos Aerospace from the Russian rocket and missile developer NPO Mashinostroyeniya and the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization, is the fastest cruise missile in the world. Last month, the Indian armed forces successfully tested the BrahMos Missile in the Arabian Sea.
