Take recruitment sites for example, there are essentially 4 reasons why someone is visiting your site.
1. They are a client who needs a position filled
2. They are a candidate who wants to apply for suitable positions
3. They are a recruitment consultant looking to get a job with you
4. Having done 1, 2 or 3 above, they want to get in touch to chat
Therefore you should be making it as easy as possible for each of these user types to complete what they arrived for.
Maybe some simple signposting with call to actions on the home page is a good start, but always make sure you are thinking about your visitors first.
