In this video, I want to share with you how I practice gratitude and how it has changed my life. Intro
When I sit down to meditate, the first thing I do is express gratitude.
I do my meditation in phases, the first phase is gratitude.
So in the gratitude phase of my mediation, I think of 3-5 things that I am grateful for today. I used to write a gratitude journal before, where I would write 3 things everyday, and I did that for a year, but then I became lazy and now I just think of these 3-5 things everyday.
The key to expressing gratitude effectively is to be specific. Instead of saying, I am grateful for family, health and prosperity everyday. Think of different things to be grateful for everyday. These can be big things or small things. Be as specific as you can. For example, if its been cloudy and snowing for 2 days, and then the sun comes out, I say “I am grateful to see the sun today”. If I’ve had a relaxing evening with friends, the next morning I express gratitude for having amazing friends. If I had a pain or a sickness that went away, I am thankful for that.
I was going through my gratitude journal which I wrote in 2018 and I will read some interesting things that I wrote down.
How has practicing gratitude changed my life? I am happier. You cannot be both grateful and depressed at the same time. Gratitude has kept me smiling, even if for a very brief moment, on days when I didn’t want to smile.
So try practicing gratitude everyday. If for any reason you cannot meditate, then the next best thing I would recommend, is expressing gratitude. And the best thing is to do both. Start small. Just write down or think of one thing that you are grateful for everyday. If you’re looking for an idea for a New Year resolution, consider doing a gratitude journal.
