In all electric steering gear systems, the tele-motor and power actuating units are the same. A separately excited generator system is used. There is no use of hydraulic oil and the steering gears operate on DC supply. They are classified as,

•Ward Leonard system
•Contractor operated single motor system.

The Ward Leonard system is widely used and asked in the exams often than the contractor operated single motor system.

Due to the continuous operation of steering gears, the maintenance routines are based usually on time periods. The recommended maintenance schedule is given below

Time Period and Maintenance

One month.......Check the commutators and contractors

Three months.......Oil bath for gear drive has to be refilled

Six months.........Inspect the gear case and renew if necessary

Two and half years........Check sliding contacts of rheostats

Two and half years.......If gear drive is worn beyond makers recommendation, replace them
