With anime’s presence and popularity being bigger than ever in America, we are starting to see it seep into American pop culture more and more, namely in movies. This isn’t a new thing, it has been around since older anime was brought overseas, and in recent years anime influence has exploded in Hollywood. Specifically, there are quite a few big movies that ripped off anime. From The Matrix’s visual homages to Ghost in the Shell to the fact that Black Swan copied from Perfect Blue a lot, there are some prominent examples of anime influence seeping just a bit too much into the films they inspired.

Other examples of this include the plot details and some design aspects of Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water making their way into Disney’s Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Pacific Rim’s many Mecha Anime homages and, the most infamous example of them all, The Lion King, which notoriously ripped off Osamu Tezuka’s Kimba the White Lion.

Because of so many instances of anime being ripped off by major american films, we decided to list off ten of the craziest examples in this video, so give it a watch to see all the times that homages went to far and when inspiration became blatant copying from anime to film. What recent films have ripped off anime? What’s the oldest example of this? Watch to find out and let us know about any other examples we left out in the comments. Thanks for watching and don’t forget to subscribe to CBR for more anime videos!
