Highlighter pen which scans words and is a dictionary

Samsung's C-Lab incubator has revealed a clever little gadget which acts as a highlighter pen, a scanner and a dictionary.

The Hyler pen is part of a range of prototype products at the CES technology show in Las Vegas.



STORY-LINE

You spend the whole day in a lecture or business conference and highlight phrase after phrase with important information.

But then you go to the bar, and lose the notes.

If you'd used the Hyler highlighter and scan, then you don't have to worry about those missing papers.

"Simply just highlight phrases that you want to scrap. And our application will automatically manage and save your key phrases that you just highlighted. And also, if you have a word that you don't understand, you want to look it up, then simply highlight the word you want to look up, and our application will show the definition of the word," says Hee Dae Tak, inventor of the Hyler scanner.

The Hyler pen scans everything that you highlight on a page.

The scanned words are sent to an app and saved.

If you press the button on the pen when highlighting a word, the app will also look up a definition.

Tak says: "Hyler utilises a line scan camera and an optical module to capture text images which then are sent to the OCR engine to digitize it."

''We often find very good phrases that we want to keep throughout our entire lives, but most of the time we forget it if we don't have a way to manage those key phrases. But with this highlighter, you know, the simple act of highlighting, you know captures those key phrases and we can keep it for our entire lives that way."

The Hyler scanner has seven hours of battery life and can be charged using a USB C cable.

Currently, it can scan words in English and in Korean.

Samsung has been known to spin prototypes from the C-Lab program into consumer-ready products.

But at this stage, there are no plans to release the Hyler pen on the market.
