How Horrific War Injuries Created Modern Plastic Surgery The origin of plastic surgery is a surprising one, dating back to World War I. Soldiers would return from battle with disfiguring injuries that would leave them scarred for life, but one doctor made it his mission to help reconstruct the soldiers battered faces to give them a chance at a normal life. Plastic surgery has taken on a new form in modern times with men and women getting surgery to alter their bodies to make themselves more desirable, but in the beginning it was much more about trying to help the war battered feel normal again.
