Royal expert on UK royal family rift

Royal expert on UK royal family rift (13 Jan 2020) An expert on the British monarchy has told the Associated Press that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's Royal status would make it difficult for them to be effectively half-in-half-out of the Royal Family.

The Duke of Sussex, or Prince Harry as he is better known, was due to hold talks on Monday with Queen Elizabeth II, his brother Prince William and father Prince Charles on Harry and wife Meghan Markle's future in the Royal Family.

The face-to-face meeting at Sandringham follows their announcement last week that they would be stepping back from their roles as senior royals and would seek to be financially independent.

One of the more fraught questions that needs to be worked out is precisely what it means for a royal to be financially independent and what activities can be undertaken to make money.

Other royals who have ventured into the world of commerce have found it complicated.

"You cannot be half royal or royal part of the time, you cannot switch it on and then off, and it seems to me that the royal identity was always going to be the dominant one," says Bob Morris, an Honorary Senior Research Associate in the Constitution Unit at UCL.

It's thought that the couple will reside in Canada half the year - where the Duchess of Sussex used to work as an actress.

Morris said he believes the Canadian government will be involved in discussions with the Palace eventually due to the Queen being the head of the Commonwealth.

The meeting comes after days of intense news coverage, in which supporters of the royal family's feuding factions used the British media to paint conflicting pictures of who was to blame for the rift.
