This is probably the hardest part for many people to accept when giving a
presentation. When you are delivering a presentation in front of an
audience the focus of the audience should be on you.

The audience has come to see and hear you. They are not there to see
some on screen presentation. If that was the case why would they need you
at all.
People connect with people. This is where your focus should go. If you want
to be an amazing presenter dial back the technology. Keep the focus on
you.
I remember there was training I had to deliver where I was given set slides
which were full of lots of text. It wasn’t what I preferred as far as content but
that’s what the company wanted me to deliver. As I was presenting I noticed
that the volume of information on the screen was distracting to the
audience. They weren’t listening to what I was saying.
So I ‘accidentally’ forgot to flip the slides. I followed the notes I had and
referred people to the relevant sections in their notebooks, but the slide
stayed the same for the rest of the session. All of a sudden I had the
attention of the audience back and I was able to deliver a much more
effective presentation.
Steve Jobs would often various devices to keep the focus on him. When
launching the iPhone, he had the phone in his pocket, announced to
product and pulled it out holding it in his hands. He talked about the phone
and it’s benefits all while he held it in his hand. This kept the focus of the
audience on him.
For the audience to be connected to you their focus must be on you. Find
ways to keep the focus of the audience on you. Be actively involved in your
presentation, use blank slides but keep the audience's attention on you.
Action
Get comfortable with the focus being on you. Remind yourself that the
audience should be paying attention to you. Think of ways you can keep
that focus on you. What could you hold or do that draws the attention to
you? Write those in your presentation plan.
