House manager Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., said on Monday that President Donald Trump's legal team had asked the senators to not believe their own eyes and ears, to reinterpret the Constitution and to believe that the president can do whatever he wants to get himself reelected. But beyond President Donald Trump's actions, Demings said, "this trial is also most certainly about character." Demings noted that "the president's lawyer never spoke about the president's character during this trial," a point she found "quite telling." Demings, a former law enforcement officer, also said she thinks that the country is holding "young police recruits to a higher standard than we are the leader of the free world." She added: "If this body fails to hold this president accountable, you must ask yourselves what kind of republic will we ultimately have with a president who thinks that he can really, truly do whatever he wants?" House managers and the president’s legal team are each delivering their closing arguments in the impeachment trial on Feb. 3 before senators began to weigh in with debate on whether to remove Trump from office. In December, the House of Representatives charged him with two articles of impeachment -- abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. After the Senate on Friday voted to bar new witness testimony and subpoenas for documents, Trump’s acquittal has seemed all but assured.
