Descending 145 Steps to the 200,000-Year-Old Sunny Jim Sea Cave

Descending 145 Steps to the 200,000-Year-Old Sunny Jim Sea Cave Talk about unusual places! Did you know that there are only 20 sea caves along the coast in La Jolla, California? Of those twenty caves, only one is accessible by land. It's the Sunny Jim sea cave, and its unusual entrance is inside the 117-year-old Cave Store located in downtown La Jolla. In fact, of all the sea caves in California this is the only one accessible by land. All the others can only be entered by boat.

This video is an underground exploration of the sea cave and the 145 steps that lead to it via a sandstone tunnel dug into the bluffs in downtown La Jolla. Geologists have estimated the sea cave to be around 200,000 years old. In the 1800s, the cave was used to smuggle liquor, drugs, and Chinese immigrants into San Diego. I'm certain the cave has quite a history of colorful characters docking their boats in it and then sneaking up the stairs to the streets of La Jolla. Be sure to watch the noisy sea lions I filmed at the end of the video. The one who was making all the noise ended up slapping his head down onto the rocks. I hope you enjoy this video of a most unusual place! And don't worry -- more videos of unusual places AND abandoned mines are coming soon!
