4th Grade Math 12.2, Customary Units of Length

4th Grade Math 12.2, Customary Units of Length We can use models to compare customary units of length by using inch tiles, a table, or fraction strips. We can show the relationship between the units that are being compared. We use a ruler to measure length. A ruler that is 1 foot long shows 12 inches in 1 foot. A ruler that is 3 feet long is called a yardstick. There are 3 feet in 1 yard. We use a model to compare the size of a foot to the size of an inch. We make a table that relates feet and inches to compare them to each other. We compare measures using the symbols for less than, greater than, or equal to. We use fraction strips to compare the size of 1 foot to 1 inch, and compare 3 feet to a yard. To compare measurements, we need to compare inches to inches, feet to feet, yards to yards, and so on. We convert (change) the measures, so they are the same, before comparing them.
