Mr Wilding is credited as the man responsible for coining the term Brexit. He was appointed by former Prime Minister David Cameron as Media and Policy Director of the Conservative Party in the EU. He told Express.co.uk: “Well, I wrote about it in 2012. “I said that unless Britain gets a grip and shows leadership in Europe and gives direction, we will stumble towards Brexit. “In another article, I said my real fear is that Brexit becomes a byword for decline, like Vichy in the war in France or Versailles. “That’s because of a lack of vision, lack of leadership by the political and media establishment, I’m afraid to say.”  Mr Wilding also revealed the top thing he would change about the EU to give it a “much more coherent direction”. He said: “The EU is a bit like Birmingham in the 19th century. “Birmingham had about 100 gas companies and things like that. “It had an alphabet soup of competing organisations, and then Joseph Chamberlain came along and put them all under one roof and unified it.”  The expert continued: “The European Union has got the European Union, the European Economic Area, the Council of Europe, the European Security and Defence Counsel, a lot of organisations. “You probably didn’t know that MPs can sit in the NATO General Assembly, they sit in the Counsel of Europe, they sit in the European Security and Defence Council. “My view was Britain could say let’s bring all of these under one roof.”  Trending  Mr Wildling added: “Let’s have a European Security Council, and the big five countries sit on that Security Council. “Effectively it’s a directorate which guides the European Union, certainly, but also the other organisations I mentioned. “I think there needs to be much more coherent direction of the whole continent, not just in economic matters, but defence, intelligence etc. “So I propose something like a European Security Council. “This can oversee the alphabet soup of organisations which are currently in charge of various aspects of policy which is moderately unified throughout the continent.”
