Although during the trip I struggled to get a simplex voice contact I received many APRS packages and also sent out APRS packets to a local iGate (but not digirepeater). I could have also used the local repeater for contacts.
I would say the Yaesu FT3D is a great hiking radio, a good all round VHF/UHF and digital radio that has APRS TNC built in.
