IN this video, I talk about the importance of discipline, how it alone can make you reach the goal of Self Realization. You must practice moderation in eating, sleeping and working habits. Without discipline there can be no Spiritual life. People are under the illusion that reading some spiritual text will make them attain the supreme goal of Self Realization, intellectual understanding of the spiritual text cannot make you an enlightened person. Though intellectual understanding of the text is necessary, because without good understanding how shall you put those spiritual principles into practice. That's where discipline comes into picture. Discipline helps you put those spiritual principles into practice. Without discipline, it's not at all possible to control the mind. As you all know that the goal of all spiritual endeavours is to go beyond the mind, right. But you cannot hope to go beyond it if you don't know how to control it. It's only when you control the mind that you can go beyond it. Without the control of the mind, it's not possible to awaken to your real Self. The Scriptures gives the beautiful example of a lake. The calm waters of the lake are compared to a calm mind, the mind devoid of any thoughts, and in this calm lake only can you see the reflection of the moon. Similarly it's only in the calm mind can you see the reflection of the Higher Self. Lord Krishna gives the secret of transformation in one verse of Bhagavad Gita. He says to Arjun, O Arjun, you can easily awaken to your Real Self, if you don't eat too much, nor should you eat less, if you don't work too much nor should you work less, if you don't sleep too much nor should you sleep less. It sounds simple but it's not so, it's the very foundation of discipline. People will overeat, and when they come to realize that it's really not good for their health, then they would start fasting. That's going from one extreme to the other. Either you will sleep for way too long, or you would remain awake most of the time. Follow the middle path. That's what Buddha gave to his disciples. Don't go to any extreme, remain in the middle, and this will transform your whole life. You will experience your Divine Nature. The mind can exist only in the extreme, it just disappears when you follow the middle path.
