Brother Phil provided another vantage point from the Nazarite Life of the Israeli Judge Sampson. He prescribed that it was about a life of distinction to be called out, and separate from the world. He also made an analogy to the first Quaker settlements in Pennsylvania, and how they tried to straddle both living a life of faith, and also being an active participants in government. Since they were conscientious objectors to war, there were several occasions including the French Indian Wars where they refused to participate. Their final conclusion proved that living a life of faith is incongruent with a life in politics.
He taught that the Hebrew word for a Nazarite has two meanings and the second definition can mean a crown. The example of how the living like a Nazarite is like the model of the Christian today, and like the lifestyle of the priesthood. The uncut hair is a type of crown, as is the abstention from strong drink, and the avoidance of the unclean, like the dead. The covenant of separation ultimately is finding distinction not exclusion from the life of the world.
