Some 90,000 Foreign Residents Reside in Gwangju-Jeonnam

The Gwangju-Jeonnam Institute announced that some 34,400 and 55,500 foreign residents resided in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo respectively in 2017. The concept of ‘Foreign resident’ included foreigners residing in Gwangju or Jeollanamdo over 3 months, immigrants who acquired Korean nationality and their children and marriage based immigrants.

According to the Gwangju-Jeonnam Institute’s announcement, some 1.86 million foreign residents lived in the country in 2017, which took 3.6% of the whole population.

In the case of Gwangju, some 34,400 foreign residents were registered, which took 2.4% of the city’s whole population, lower than the national average, while Jeollanamdo saw 55,500 registered foreign residents, recording 2.9% of the whole of Jeollanamdo’s population.

As for the annual average growth rate of foreign residents, the number stood at 1.86 million in 2017 from 1.8 million in 2015. It had steadily increased at an annual average rate of 4.3 percent.

Gwangju also saw a sharp increase of immigrants from 29,000 in 2015 to 34,400 in 2017, with an annual average increase of 8.7 percent. For Jeollanamdo province, the number rose from 50,800 in 2015 to 55,500 in 2017, a similar increase to the national average with an annual average growth rate of 4.5 percent.

Typhoon Lingling leaves considerable damages in Gwangju and S.Jeolla

The year’s 13th typhoon Lingling left some considerable damages in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo.

Typhoon Lingling brought heavy rain and strong winds to South Korea Saturday, leaving three people dead and more than 20 injured before heading into North Korea.

The typhoon, which was one of the five strongest to hit Korea, damaged over 3,600 facilities nationwide. Reports of damage were initially low at 430 as of Saturday night, but these increased significantly overnight to 3,642.

More than 200 flights were grounded at airports nationwide. About 150 international flights departing from or arriving to Korea were canceled, while some 120 flights to and from Jeju Island were called off.

There were no reports of human casualties in Gwangju and South Jeolla. However, some 4,000 hectares of agricultural land saw crop damage. Rice fields were destroyed and fruit in orchards were blown from their trees, while other farming areas including Naju and Yeongam were flooded.

The storm also knocked out power to about 16,000 homes in 16 cities and counties in the region.
